Is this exchange fake?
Start with eight questions.
A fake exchange can look exactly like a real one; charts, balances and profit curves are all edited on the back end. But some things can't be faked. Run the eight-point check, then read the methods below.

Signs of a fake crypto exchange
| Real exchange | Fake exchange | |
|---|---|---|
| How you heard of it | Your own search, price-site rankings, a friend in person | A stranger, group or “mentor” in a private chat |
| Trading data | Listed on CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap | Nowhere, or only inside its own app |
| Proof of reserves | Published and verifiable | None |
| Deposit address | Generated for you inside the platform | A personal wallet or bank account they send |
| Withdrawals | Normal rules, network fee only | Pay tax, deposit or unlock fee first |
| Support | In-app tickets, verifiable channels | Private messaging apps only |
Cloned trading apps with rigged back ends keep appearing; one recent case cost victims millions of yuan (Sina Finance). A polished interface and a nice profit curve prove nothing.
How to verify a real exchange: four checks
- Price sites list it: search the name on CoinGecko or CoinMarketCap for volume, reserves and ranking.
- Reserves are public: OKX and Binance publish proof of reserves you can check against your own account.
- Official contacts can be verified: the OKX app's Help → Official verification checks websites, emails, phone numbers and social accounts.
- Deposits and withdrawals stay on-platform: your deposit address is generated for you, and withdrawals only cost a network fee.

What fake exchanges fear most
- Being searched: one search exposes them, so they tell you to “ignore outsiders” and “trust your mentor”.
- Big withdrawals: small withdrawals work to build trust; big ones trigger fees or a “risk freeze”.
- Police reports: chat logs and receipts let investigators trace the money.
A fake exchange won't let me withdraw. What now?
The hard truth: the “coins” in a fake exchange account are usually just numbers in a database. So:
- Don't pay anything more: “pay the tax and you can withdraw” is the final squeeze.
- Keep evidence: screenshots, download links, chats, transfer receipts, account names.
- Report quickly: contact local police or your national fraud line; the sooner, the more likely funds can be frozen.
- Beware recovery scams: anyone promising to recover funds for an upfront fee is running round two.
Recovery depends on whether funds are frozen in time and whether the people can be traced; nothing is guaranteed. The best protection is using only large, established exchanges.
Can a real exchange suddenly shut down?
Real exchanges can run into trouble, but it's a different thing. They may pause withdrawals after a hack or regulatory action: on September 24, 2026, Bitget lost about $352 million from hot wallets, paused withdrawals and said user funds were covered by its protection fund (CoinDesk).
That's why reserves and a record of paying users back matter, and why long-term holdings shouldn't all sit on one platform.
