What does a referral code do?
It's set the moment you sign up.
Almost every exchange sign-up page has a “Referral code (optional)” field. Whether you fill it, and with whose code, looks trivial. It actually decides the fee on every trade you'll ever make.
What does a crypto exchange referral code do?
A referral code is a user's referral ID. Entering one at sign-up creates a referral link between you and that person, normally permanent. It works both ways:
| For you | For the referrer | |
|---|---|---|
| Fees | Some codes include a discount on every trade | Earns a share of your fees |
| New-user rewards | You still get the exchange's rewards | Some campaigns add invite rewards |
| Account and funds | Fully yours; the referrer can't see or touch them | Sees invite counts and commission only |
So a code with a discount only helps you. On OKX, OK66688 takes 20% off spot and futures fees for life, applied automatically.
Why do exchanges use referral codes?
It's one of their main ways to grow. Sharing part of the fee with the referrer and the new user is cheaper and easier to track than advertising.
- For the exchange: growth it can measure and pay for by results;
- for the referrer: commission that grows with your trading;
- for you: a discount you'd otherwise give up.
The field is optional, but at most exchanges it can't be filled in after sign-up.
Where do I find a referral code?
- Friends: anyone already using the exchange has a code under “Invite friends”.
- Websites and creators: pages that openly state the code and what it gives, like our OKX code OK66688.
- Campaign pages: some official promotions come with a code.
Check three things: the sign-up page is the exchange's official page; the code field shows the code you want; nobody asks you to send money, pay a deposit or join a group. If money is involved, it's a scam, not a referral.
What is a crypto rebate?
A rebate returns part of your fees. There are two kinds:
| Built-in discount | Private cashback | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | The exchange charges less on each trade | The referrer gets commission, then pays part back to you |
| Conditions | Enter the code at sign-up | Join a group, share your UID, hit volume targets |
| How much | OKX with OK66688: fixed 20% | Claims vary: 30%, 50%, 70%… |
| Personal info needed | None | UID, sometimes screenshots or messaging apps |
| Reliability | System rule, every trade | Depends on the other person; can stop anytime |
Which exchange has the highest referral rebate?
Most “highest rebate” claims are private cashback from affiliates, not official discounts. High numbers come with catches:
- cashback depends on someone's goodwill; if it stops, you have no recourse;
- cashback groups are a common entry point for signal groups, coin shilling and pig-butchering scams;
- the UID and trading data you share can be misused.
For beginners, a built-in discount is the better choice: nobody to contact, nothing to share, applied to every trade automatically. OKX code OK66688 works this way.
